March 17, 2016 – Bethesda, MD – On Saturday, April 9, Kalanidhi Dance presents Rasa Revisited, a dance theater production of Kuchipudi, a classical South Indian dance form. The performance is a remounting of the company’s critically acclaimed production Rasa that premiered in Washington in 2005 and toured India in 2007. Conceived and choreographed by artistic director Anuradha Nehru and Kishore Mosalikanti (Chennai, India), Rasa Revisited features an original score by B.V. Balasai (Chennai, India).
The word rasa means “essence” or “emotion.” The Indian performing arts identify nine distinct rasas that make up the entire range of human emotions. They are love, happiness, fear, sorrow, disgust, wonder, anger, courage and peace. Rasa Revisited uses the expressively rich language of Kuchipudi to explore these nine emotions through storytelling, movement and music.
Each rasa is introduced through a scene from the great Indian epic the Ramayana and is further explored through innovative group choreography. The result, as reviewed by The Washington Post, is “an epic and expressive quest” that “blend[s] both traditional and contemporary elements in a fully realized evening.”
Kalanidhi Dance restages Rasa Revisited as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. The special events planned in 2016 include the launch of a digital timeline of Kalanidhi’s history, a Salon Series that introduces Kuchipudi to small gatherings in the Kalanidhi studio, and Kalanidhi@25, an exciting evening of original choreography that marks the end of the year-long celebration. Rasa Revisited will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 7pm at the University of the District of Columbia Theater for the Arts in Washington, D.C. An artist talkback will immediately follow the performance. Tickets are available online.
