
Class levels are a general guideline; placement and advancement by recommendation of instructor only.
| Beginners I |
| For students with no dance experience in any discipline, or no previous experience in Indian dance movement or vocabulary. Class introduces students to Kuchipudi dance posture and an understanding of basic rhythm and footwork. Students begin the first half of fundamental steps and Asamyutha hastas. | Beginners II |
| For students who have completed half of the Kuchipudi fundamental steps and learned the Asamyutha hastas. Class begins focus on development in technique. Students complete the study of all the fundamental steps, Pada Bhedas and Samyutha Hastas. |
| Intermediate I |
| For students who have completed all Kuchipudi fundamental steps, learnt Samyutha hastas, and Pada Bhedas. Emphasis on technique development and mastery of footwork. Students begin jathi sequences and basic shlokas. |
| Intermediate II |
| For students who have completed all the jati sequences in the 4 beat time measure and learned to interpret the basic shlokas. Students continue learning Indian dance theory and interpretation, and continue on with jati sequences. |
| Advanced I |
| For students who have completed all the jati sequences in the 3, 5, 7 and 9 beat time measure and have learned the interpretations of the Asamyutha hastas. Class emphasizes strengthening of skills and mastery of more challenging movement and vocabulary. Advanced I students start basic items in the Kuchipudi repertoire, learn the interpretations of Samyutha hastas, and begin study in abhinaya. |
| Advanced II |
| For students who have completed the first 5 basic items in the Kuchipudi repertoire and have learned the interpretations of the Samyutha hastas. Students continue study of abhinaya and interpretation of Indian dance theory and culture. Advanced II students begin perfecting all aspects of dance technique and focus on mastering dance as an art form. |
