Kalandihi Dance Repertoire

9 Dancers | 60 minutes

Rasa can mean mood or emotion, and nine have been identified in Hindu belief as the foundation from which all other human emotions emerge. In Rasa, these nine emotions – love, happiness, fear, sorrow, disgust, wonderment, anger, courage and peace – unfold in a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary movement, sound and inspiration. Contextualized within nine narrative episodes from the epic Ramayana, each emotion is elaborated through music, body and pure dance. The result is a production that seamlessly weaves together two experiences – the story of the Ramayana, and the portrayal of the moods themselves.

Yaatra (Journey)

5 – 9 Dancers | 60 minutes

Indian classical dance is rooted in ancient tradition, yet its reach spans continents, breaking borders of culture, nationality, and aesthetics. Springing from these roots, Yaatra, or Journey, is an evening of traditional pieces and original choreography, all embedded in the foundations of the Kuchipudi dance style. Yaatra juxtaposes time-honored choreography with contemporary work, perfectly illustrating Kalanidhi Dance’s own journey through the ancient yet relevant world of Kuchipudi dance. The evening is united by the cultural threads that bind the dancers to their art while supporting their expansion into non-traditional spaces.
